Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Jordan Henderson, following a mutual agreement between the midfielder and Brentford to end his contract a year ahead of schedule. The 36‑year‑old former Liverpool captain has put pen to paper on a two‑year deal at Stamford Bridge, running until summer 2028, and joins as a free agent with no transfer fee involved.
Brentford had previously announced they had reached an understanding when Henderson joined last summer that they would not stand in his way should a major opportunity arise after the World Cup. That agreement has now been honoured, allowing him to make the move to west London without cost.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Henderson said: “Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Manager Xabi Alonso targeted Henderson to bring elite leadership, dressing‑room standards and tactical control to balance a young Chelsea squad, with the midfielder arriving shortly after Danny Welbeck as part of the club’s targeted addition of experienced heads. Henderson made 34 appearances for Brentford last season, and will now join up with his new team‑mates ahead of the 2026/27 campaign
