Newcastle United have reached a full verbal agreement with Matthias Jaissle to become their new head coach, bringing to an end his three‑year spell in charge of Saudi Pro League side Al‑Ahli. The deal is all but finalised, with compensation terms agreed and the 38‑year‑old German set to sign a long‑term contract until June 2030.
Jaissle will depart Al‑Ahli, where he has built an impressive record since taking over in 2023: he guided the club to two AFC Champions League titles, one Saudi Super Cup, and a consistent top‑two finish in the league. Before moving to Saudi Arabia, he spent two successful seasons at Red Bull Salzburg, winning back‑to‑back Austrian Bundesliga and Cup doubles, and leading the side to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history.
He was identified as Newcastle’s top target immediately after Eddie Howe confirmed his departure by mutual consent, ending his five‑year tenure at St James’ Park. The shared PIF ownership between the two clubs allowed negotiations to move quickly, with Newcastle paying a compensation fee in the region of £9.4 million to release Jaissle from his contract.
A former professional defender, Jaissle is known for his distinct coaching style: high‑intensity pressing, quick progressive transitions, and a focus on developing young talent — all principles that align closely with Newcastle’s long‑term project.
Jaissle is expected to travel to Tyneside this weekend, undergo formal procedures, and be officially unveiled early next week. He will take full control of first‑team preparations immediately ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool on 16 August, and will also work alongside the board to shape the squad for the upcoming campaign.
