Jordan Henderson is on the brink of completing a move to Chelsea on a free transfer, after Brentford confirmed they have mutually agreed to terminate his contract one year early. The 36‑year‑old former Liverpool captain has agreed personal terms on a two‑year deal running until June 2028, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the move is all but done, pending a medical later this week.
Henderson joined Brentford last summer on a two‑year contract following a spell at Ajax, featuring 34 times across all competitions and playing a key role as the Bees finished ninth in the Premier League. A gentleman’s agreement reached at the time of signing meant the club would not stand in his way should a major opportunity arise, a commitment honoured following post‑World Cup discussions. Brentford director of football Phil Giles explained: “We agreed we would sit down after the World Cup and decide what the targets would be for both the club and Jordan. Following those conversations, it was clear Jordan’s preference was to try something different in the final years of his career, and we will not stand in his way.”
In his farewell statement, Henderson said: “I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me and the support shown to me and my family from day one. Coming back to the Premier League was really important, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.”
The transfer forms part of Chelsea’s revised recruitment strategy under head coach Xabi Alonso, after co‑owner Behdad Eghbali acknowledged earlier this year that the club’s long‑standing focus on signing young talent needed a “tweak”. Henderson will bring vast top‑flight experience, elite leadership and big‑game know‑how to balance a youthful squad, offering competition, tactical discipline and mentorship in midfield. He also featured for England at the 2026 World Cup before suffering a broken arm, an injury from which he has now fully recovered.
No transfer fee will be involved, with Henderson available as a free agent once his exit formalities are complete. Chelsea are also progressing in talks to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the two experienced players seen as key additions ahead of the new campaign.
