Marcus Rashford has been handed the number 14 shirt on his return to Manchester United – the same iconic number he wore during his successful loan spell at FC Barcelona last season.
At Barça, he chose 14 to honour childhood idol Thierry Henry, who wore it at Arsenal and Barcelona, alongside legendary Johan Cruyff who made the number famous with the Catalan giants. He starred in the shirt, registering 14 goals and assists across 49 games and helping Barça lift the La Liga title, before they declined to trigger the £26 million permanent buy option.
Back at Old Trafford, his long-time number 10 is now taken by Matheus Cunha, so United have assigned him the vacated number 14 – previously worn by Christian Eriksen, plus United favourites Javier Hernández, Jesse Lingard and more. Confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, the move is a clear signal of trust and a fresh start under manager Michael Carrick, showing the club wants to reintegrate him into the squad unless a top European bid arrives before the window closes.
“It’s a number with huge history. I feel the responsibility and want to give everything every time I step onto the pitch,” Rashford says, carrying the pride and drive he felt in Spain back to his boyhood club.
Once the academy graduate who broke through as a teenager, won major trophies and earned an MBE off the pitch, Rashford now begins a new chapter wearing 14 – aiming to rediscover his best form, fight for a starting spot and prove he can deliver for United again this season
