Manchester United have joined the list of clubs keeping a close eye on Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, sources have confirmed – though no formal approach or bid has yet been made for the 30-year-old.
Watkins enjoyed another outstanding campaign last term, scoring 21 Premier League goals and establishing himself as one of the division’s most consistent all-round forwards. His physical presence, intelligent movement and proven ability to perform at the highest level have caught the attention of United’s recruitment team as they assess attacking options ahead of the new season.
Reports suggest a fee in the region of £40 million would be required to strike a deal. Villa recently rejected a £30m offer from Fenerbahçe, and will only consider selling if they secure a replacement – with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson strongly linked to the West Midlands club.
Crucially, any move for Watkins is conditional on United’s own outgoing plans. The club are prioritising a departure for Joshua Zirkzee, who has attracted interest from Juventus and Roma, before adding further firepower to their ranks.
United’s primary focus remains completing their midfield overhaul, with Manu Kone top of the target list, but sporting director Jason Wilcox is actively weighing up every option to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad depth.
For now, the link remains at the monitoring stage. United have not held talks with Villa or Watkins’ representatives, and will only advance their interest once the picture around Zirkzee’s future becomes clear.
