Barcelona and Gerard Pique ‘hold a secret meeting to discuss a FURTHER reduction in the center-back’s salary’ as the club seeks to free up cash in order to register their new signings.

  • Barcelona are seeking to get a number of players to reduce their salaries
  • The club needs to show La Liga they have offloaded wages to register players
  • Gerard Pique had previously agreed on a reduction in his salary with the club

Barcelona is reported to have held a meeting with Gerard Pique over the legendary center-back accepting a further reduction in his salary.

The Catalan club is seeking current players to accept a reduction in their salaries to bring them in line with the new wage structure the club is trying to implement after years of bloated spending on players’ pay packets.

As per La Liga’s regulations, Barcelona needs to show that they have offloaded enough money to be able to register the various new signings they have brought in this summer. The league looks at their income next to their outgoings to determine how much they can spend that coming season.

Gerard Pique is said to have held a meeting with Barcelona over a further reduction in his wages

According to Sport, with the club desperate to register Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kunde, figures have met with Pique to discuss another cut to his salary.

The report states that the most recent discussion is in view of the league not accepting the club’s attempts at the activation of the most recent economic levers – essentially, means to comply with their iteration of Financial Fair Play – and that there might need to be an extra effort made by the playing squad to ensure new arrivals can be registered.

It has also been suggested that the Barcelona skipper discussed other things with the hierarchy, including his sporting future, role in the team under manager Xavi Hernandez and, perhaps, a more existential discussion of the club’s economic future.

Pique had previously agreed on a wage reduction at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic which battered the club’s finances

The club, despite their bravado in the market this summer, still finds themselves on a precarious financial footing with them owing a number of players’ wages stretching into the tens of millions.

Figures from across the world of football have looked on in staggering bemusement as the club continues to spend money on new players despite not appearing to have paid many in their current squad their previously agreed wages.
